How to succeed with your First Look

The “First Look”: Why should you cherish this intimate moment before saying “I do”?

On your wedding day, time seems to fly by. Between the preparations, the ceremony, and the reception, moments with just the two of you are rare. That’s where the First Look comes in.

As a Ottawa photographer, I’ve seen many couples torn between tradition and this “new trend”. Here’s why the First Look might just be the best choice for your special day.

What is the First Look?

This is a moment staged by your photographer where you get to see each other in your wedding clothes before the ceremony, in a private, quiet setting.

Away from the guests’ gaze, with no pressure, you can finally let your stress melt away.

3 Reasons to Choose the First Look:

1. Experience your emotions to the fullest

During the ceremony, there’s often a certain amount of nervousness because of the crowd. During a First Look, you’re free to do as you please: you can cry, kiss, laugh out loud, and even whisper a few intimate words to each other without a microphone or an audience. It’s often the most genuine moment of the day.

2. Maximize light and your time

The Ottawa region is full of beautiful spots, but the light changes quickly (The weather too)!

By taking your couple photos before the ceremony, you’ll have flawless makeup and hair. Plus, you can join your guests right away for the cocktail hour! No need to slip away for an hour between the ceremony and dinner.

3. Calm Your Nerves

If you tend to be anxious, seeing your partner a few hours before saying “I do” is a real comfort.

It turns stress into joyful excitement.

My Favorite Spots in Ottawa for a First Look

I love being in the forest or near a river or lake... The trails in Gatineau Park are full of beautiful spots (especially in the fall!).

Otherwise, the Arboretum and the experimental farm offer some really beautiful spots.

For a spot with a nice view of Ottawa, the gardens at the Canadian Museum of History are a great option.

For a more rustic vibe, there are plenty of beautiful spots around the Chelsea Vineyard.

And for a more urban feel, there’s the Old Hull neighborhood with its brick buildings and murals.

My Pro Tips for Total Success The secret is intimacy.

Keep this moment just for the two of you (and me, your photographer, hidden behind a tree!).

Without the immediate family or the bridal party present, preserve the magic.

Plan ahead: Schedule about 30 to 45 minutes so you don’t feel rushed.

Trust your photographer: I’ll find the angle where the light is softest to capture your reactions beautifully.

Be yourselves: Don’t pose. Forget the camera. Live in the moment.

Conclusion

Whether it’s traditional or modern, the most important thing is that this moment reflects who you are.

If you’re dreaming of a moment of tranquility before the events begin, the First Look is perfect for you.
